Directed by Sidney Lumet, "The Pawnbroker" is the first commercial American film to deal with a character who would soon become a staple of Hollywood Holocaust movies: the Holocaust survivor. Brilliantly played by Rod Steiger, the film's protagonist, Sol Nazerman, is a Shoah survivor whose wife and children were murdered in the camps. Now living in America, Sol runs a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem. The traumatization of the Holocaust has turned Sol catatonic; he exists in a kind of living death. Sol's assistant, Jesus, is a Puerta Rican ex-gang member who sees Sol as a kind of father figure, though Sol rarely reciprocates his feelings. The film builds to a shattering climax. "The Pawnbroker" also includes some avant-garde cinematic techniques, such as Sol's fleeting flashbacks to his horrific experiences in the camps.
