Andrew Laszlo: Surviving the Holocaust Description:
Andrew Laszlo grew up in a middle-class home in Papa, Hungary. His father was a WWI hero. In 1944, his family was forcibly relocated to the ghetto. From there, he and his brother were conscripted into labor service. The rest of his family was taken by train to Auschwitz and other sites where they perished. After escaping the labor camps, Laszlo was captured and sent by rail car to Bergen-Belsen. He was there at the same time as Anne Frank. He escaped from Russian occupied post-war Hungary to the displaced persons camp in Ulm, Germany where he filed an emigration petition to America. He arrived in New York Harbor with $2.36 in his pocket. He wore clothes sewn out of a US Army blanket. He did not speak English and had no post high school education. Laszlo became a world-famous cinematographer doing films such as Shogun and Rambo: First Blood and was nominated for two Emmy awards.

His son, Andrew Laszlo Jr. tells the story of the skill, instinct, and cunning that led to his father’s survival during WWII, while emphasizing his strong will to put the past behind and build a new life. He discusses some of the forgotten heroes that risked their lives so that Laszlo and others could live. Laszlo’s father kept his past a secret for more than half a century. On the 50th anniversary of his arrival in America, a leather-bound book detailing his past arrived on his son’s doorstep. The book titled Footnote to History is available on Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com.

Laszlo’s presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at the B’nai Israel Cultural Center located at 327 W. Galena Street. The lecture is free, but contributions to the Cultural Center are welcomed.
