Discussion on Afghan Culture with Zia Kazimi
5:30 PM
The Clark Chateau
Description:
Butte HEART and The Root & The Bloom Collective invite you to a discussion with Zia Kazimi at the Clark Chateau, 321 W. Broadway.
Zia was born in Denver, Colorado, to an Afghan father and an American mother. His dad was one of many Afghan students sent to the U.S. in the 1940’s as part of the King’s plan to modernize Afghanistan. His first exposure to Afghanistan was when he arrived at age eight with no Farsi/Dari and plopped in 3rd grade in an Afghan school. He spent his formative years, (8-18) living in Kabul. Although speaking English at home, he was brought up around his father’s side of the family, and his friends from school and the neighborhood were all Afghan, so his understanding of language and culture is proficient.
Zia has called Montana home for the past 26 years. Before retiring, he worked for the Montana Department of Transportation in Helena and was responsible for mapping and roadway data collection. He is an avid traveler and enjoys traveling around the globe seeing new places and learning about new cultures. Hi last overseas jaunt was just prior to Covid, where he was fortunate enough to climb Mount Kilamanjaro. He is currently assisting with the Afghan resettlement program in Helena.
Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served, donations welcome.
